Obituary of Violet Bajaj - 21st January 1917 - 29th May 2020.

Violet Bajaj, was one of the early women scientists of India and was a contemporary of the illustrious Anna Mani and Rajeswari Chatterjee. After her Masters of Science in Chemistry at Lucknow University, she spent time at IISc Bangalore being one of the early women students there in the 1940s. Though she started at Department of Chemistry she moved to Fermentation Technology at IISc. She went on to do her Ph.D. on Aspergillus niger and publish papers with Dr P. S. Krishnan at the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. Later she worked at CSIR’s Biochemicals Unit (now CSIR-IGIB) in Delhi from 1950s until her retirement, where she was in charge of the quality control of the products. She was credited as one of the oldest living alumnus of IISc and women scientist of the country.
